Now they take the field both,

Full irous and inly wroth;

They are now together met, 9805

Their spears are broken, and arrows shot.

They drew their swords from their scauberks,[558]

Their cloven shields and hauberks,

The rich armour they all to-carve;

There shall a thousand ere even starve.[559] 9810

Each one other all to-draws,

They cut in two both liver and maws,

Hand and head, lung and milt;[560]

Many a good man there was spilt.

While they had day and might out see, 9815

They would never in peace be.

They fought thus clean days twelve,

’Til they had need their dead men delve,

And they of Greece might not ordain

To fight forsooth nor more sustain; 9820

So were they overcome and taken

And by Hector held awaken,

That they must rest or else die.

It was passed after the May,

The weather was hot, the sun shone, 9825

The Grecians made therefore great moan:

For through fight and the heat

Many one lost that day their sweat.
